Our Mission & Vision

Founded:  2025 in New York City

Mission

To accelerate the translation of infectious disease research into public health solutions while creating equitable pathways for women and underrepresented scientists to lead  and participate in biomedical research.

Vision

A world where infectious disease research rapidly transforms into life-saving interventions and women and underrepresented scientists have equal access to resources, funding, and leadership opportunities.

Our Story: Why NSS Exists

The Nexus Scientific Solutions LLC was born from a journey that defied the odds—and a deep belief that every young woman deserves a chance to pursue science, no matter where she starts.

Founder Dr. Maika G. Mitchell's path to science was anything but conventional. Growing up as a homeless teenager in NYC, becoming a scientist was never part of the plan. But Dr. Mitchell knew she was smart, determined, and hungry for something more. What she didn't have was a roadmap—until a high school mentor saw her potential and opened a door to possibility.

"We're building pathways for the underrepresented individuals who are told they don't have a chance to work in research and participate in research.

Because I was and am, one of them."

— Dr. Maika Mitchell, Founder

That mentor, who lived with HIV/AIDS, became more than a guide—he became proof that one person's belief can change a life's trajectory. When he passed away, his legacy became Dr. Mitchell's calling. She pursued HIV/AIDS research in graduate school, driven by a personal mission to honor his memory and fight the disease that disproportionately affects marginalized communities.

Then cancer touched her family, adding another dimension to her passion for translational research. She witnessed firsthand how diseases don't discriminate—but access to care, research funding, and health outcomes certainly do. These experiences fueled her commitment to health equity and community-engaged science.

For over 20+ years, Dr. Mitchell worked at top medical centers and government agencies, navigating the complexities of academic research and witnessing the barriers that prevent talented women—especially those from underrepresented backgrounds—from advancing in science. And,  for inclusion of of women and underrepresented individuals from engaging and participating in research studies.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the urgent need for diverse perspectives in infectious disease research. Health equity cannot be achieved when the researchers developing solutions don't reflect the communities most affected by disease.

NSS was founded in 2025 with a clear mission: to create research pathways that cover women and underrepresented individuals.

Dr. Mitchell didn't just want to give back—she wanted to make a dent in the universe. She wanted to build the infrastructure, mentorship networks, applications for health equity inclusion, and funding pathways that didn't exist when she needed them most. NSS & NITR are that infrastructure.

Our approach is simple but transformative: we're not just talking about change—we're building it.

This is personal. This is urgent. This is necessary.

This is why NSS exists.
